Exciting 28th Dec

Several events made today an exciting one.

1. I cooked my first meal since I returned to Malaysia. Grandma is staying with aunt now hence I am cooking lunches for myself. I cook vegetarian only, so I looked through the fridge and salvaged what I could find and voila~

A healthy mixture of pumpkin, carrots, garlic, shallots and kiwi fruit!
no salt, little bit of sugar, fried with little bit of oil.
tastes sour (kiwi) with some sweet (pumpkin).
I like! though I may be the only one hahaha.

2.  My boxes arrived from California! All eight of them. I quickly unpacked them and within an hour, the boxes are flattened and the stuff....stuffed away into my room. My books are here! My desktop computer is here! And my bed companions are back!
RM1027...from Port Klang to ma house. The company who did my custom clearance and transport was good...if you need such service, ask me. I bagi contact. Thanks Mas for the recommendation.

Together again~
(hahaha...so girlish)

Unluckily, as I was unpacking my plates and cups, I dropped the spoon/ladle that my friend gave me. SO SAD. My heart broke on the spot too. It survived the journey across the Pacific, survived the rough handling at the ports, only to be broken by the person who was waiting for its arrival. I am going to try to mend it.

3. The praying mantis in mom's bathroom hatched! We both witnessed the female laying them about a month ago on the underside of the sink.

Now her offspring have hatched, and an active lot they were. Glistening dark dark blue, forearms up with sharp sawtooth ready, these guys were cute!

Of course a bathroom ain't a proper place for 17+ praying mantises so I transferred them to our garden, just before a heavy rainstorm hit. Hopefully these guys will do well and help us suppress some pests =).

4. I asked a girl out, and she said she would call me when she's free. Hahaha. I am so excited!!

  3. You're back!! Anyway, I hope the girl will call you and you will get marry when my Ph.D is conferred.

    Wanna ask you one question?

Did you hear about GM mosquito issue in Malaysia? What say you?

  4. Thanks to all for your well-wishes regarding the girl!

@Mizzshinochazzy: I didn't know that they could be dark blue/black either. Then again, they come in various colors and insects often change colors throughout development. They were cute, weren't they? This morning my mom and I looked for them in the garden and we found 4 of them!

@kumi: memang sad,,,I felt like crying after the spoon broke! Then reminded myself that it's another thing. Heheh, the dish looks delicious but I'm sure you wouldn't like it hahaha.

@Farina: Haha...I do wish to marry before I turn 30, so thanks.

  5. Yes I heard about the mass release of mosquitoes, but initially I thought they were irradiated to make them sterile. Now I read more and realised that they are actually, truly GM mosquitoes with quick death switch.
I don't really have anything more to say that hasn't been raised in the media/forums. It's almost certain that the scientific world will be looking at Msia's release as it's a huge outdoor exercise, a thing that most countries have trouble executing due to public outcry and concern over GM.
For me, GM is on the forefront of our tech and it would seem like a waste to not utilize it. However, the backlash can be very serious and with due time, mistakes will happen, unexpected mutations will happen, and we will face unintended consequences. Like in this case, they said that 3% of the offspring actually survived though they expected 0% survival. That 3% is scary!
Should we stop GM because of our fears? Should we do more tests? I think not, because there are no results to show convincingly that GM is bad, or worse than the alternatives.
All tests ada error margins, and fear will always exist no matter what. Every advance in technology has its pro and cons. Even cellular phone, such a wonderful invention, has changed our society and human relationships forever in so short a time, and it's irreversible too...good or bad?
Without reading the actual articles on the GM mosquitoe research, I can't say if their interpretations are good or not.

On a personal note, I'm more for preventative measures like reducing breeding grounds. Chemicals and genetic stuff memang seem a bit too elaborate for my taste, and since I am an ecologist, too much chems and genetic-modification may drive me out of business!
